With “The Martian” being one of my favorite movies, I was thrilled to see that another one of Andy Weir’s novels,“Project Hail Mary,” was also being adapted into a film.
“Project Hail Mary” is about science teacher, Ryland Grace, who finds himself stranded on a spaceship after he wakes up from an induced coma. Through slowly regaining his memories, Grace discovers that he must find a solution to neutralize a mysterious bacteria dimming the Sun. On his way to save humanity, Grace travels to breathtaking solar systems, encounters a hilarious alien, Rocky, and nearly loses his life on a hostile planet.
Compared to the novel, it is clear that the film prioritizes adventure and spectacle overscientific orientation. In the novel, for instance, Grace methodically conducts a series of detailed science experiments upon waking—carefully observing gravity, analyzing his tools and drawing conclusions about the spacecraft’s nature. The film, however, bypasses these experiments entirely, cutting straight to more conventionally dramatic revelations—namely, that his spacecraft carries insufficient fuel to bring him back home.
Where the film pulls back on science, it more than compensates with heart. Unlike traditional media, who typically depicts aliens as sinister or threatening, “Project Hail Mary” provides a positive outlook on alien-human relationships.Grace and Rocky learn to communicate, build technology to adapt to each other’s environments and unite by the shared mission of protecting their respective stars from the spread of the bacteria. Thebear-like hugs and inside jokesbetween the two characters areheartwarming, a testament tohow genuine connection cantranscend even the barriers ofbiology and language.
From the intricate set design to the seamless interweaving of past and present tense, “Project HailMary” rewards attention at every level. As a space enthusiast myself, “Project Hail Mary” is—as Rocky would say— “Amaze!Amaze! Amaze!
