A wealthy financier with connections to influential political and business figures, Jeffrey Epstein built his fortune after founding the firm J. Epstein & Co. in 1982, which managed assets worth more than $1 billion. His wealth supplied his extravagant lifestyle, which included several high profile properties, most notably Little St. James—a 72-acre private island located two miles off the coast of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Per CBS News, Epstein’s network and private properties became central to a major sex-trafficking investigation, which documented associations between him and affluent figures, including U.S. officials and Wall Street executives.

In March 2005, Palm Beach police launched an investigation into Epstein after the family of a 14-year-old girl reported that she had been sexually assaulted at Epstein’s mansion. As the investigation continued, multiple underage girls told police that Epstein had paid them to perform sexual massages, per PBS. By May 2006, police recommended several charges involving unlawful sex with a minor, though the Palm Beach County State Attorney, Barry Krischer, took an atypical step of presenting the case to a grand jury rather than moving forward with charges directly. Around the same time, workers at a St. Thomas airstrip told Vanity Fair in an interview they had seen Epstein board his private jet with girls who appeared to be underage.
The case eventually resulted in a highly controversial plea agreement. According to Al Jazeera, Epstein pleaded guilty to procuring a minor for prostitution and served fewer than 13 months of an 18-month sentence, much of it under work-release conditions that allowed him to leave jail. The plea agreement allowed him to avoid federal sex- trafficking charges under 18 U.S.C. § 1591, which carry a minimum sentence of 15 years to life imprisonment, in exchange for pleading guilty to lesser state charges.
“The political establishment reared its ugly head when Epstein was offered his plea deal. There is no moral justification to explain then-Attorney Acosta’s lenience towards Epstein. Epstein leveraged his billionaire status to not only sexually exploit children, but to also completely bypass prosecution for those horrific actions. The plea bargain was so lenient that it violated the Crime Victims’ Rights Act,” Senior Advi Wehzan said.
Records released by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) on Jan. 30 indicate that from 2008 to 2019, Epstein was able to continue his financial operation uninterrupted through major banking institutions that allowed his financial transactions while a network of financiers remained.

Ultimately, federal authorities reopened the case against Epstein after an investigation by the Miami Herald
revealed that Acosta, along with other prosecutors, had worked closely with Epstein’s defense team to limit the scope of the investigation and secure a secret plea agreement. The Herald also reported that victims were not informed of the plea deal until after it was finalized, raising serious concerns about transparency and due process and prompting renewed federal scrutiny. On July 6, 2019, federal agents arrested Epstein and charged him in the Southern District of New York with sex trafficking of minors, per NPR. However, the case never reached trial. On Aug. 10, 2019, Epstein was found dead at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan. The New York City chief medical examiner ruled the cause of death as suicide.
The renewed scrutiny surrounding Epstein also brought attention to his past connections with President Donald Trump. Per BBC, photographs published by the Palm Beach Post showed Epstein attending a charity fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago in 2000 alongside Trump. Following Epstein’s arrest in 2019, Trump stated that the two had not spoken.
